This impressive Big Coin boasts a 65 mm diameter and weighs just over five ounces of pure silver. It is further enhanced with reverse gold plating, giving it a warm, gleaming contrast that highlights the stunning engraved relief of Queen Elizabeth II against the golden backdrop.
This coin is scarce, popular, and dramatically impressive, making it a must-have for collectors and investors alike. The 2019 edition is part of a series that has seen immediate sell-outs since its introduction by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2015. Previous coins in the Big Coin series have appreciated to values as high as $1,200. Notably, while the 2018 Big Coins had a mintage of 1,500, the 2019 issue is limited to just 1,250, significantly increasing its scarcity and collectability.
The Design:
The coin features Emanuel Hahn’s iconic caribou design, first issued in 1937. This design has graced Canadian quarters for over 80 years, but it is showcased most majestically in this large format. The reverse gold plating fills the field, while the silver surface captures attention with its engraved relief, which includes the words “Canada,” “Dollar,” and the date “2019.” The reverse gold-plated obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
