About the Bigleaf Maple:
Growing in the southwest corner of British Columbia, the Bigleaf Maple thrives in low to mid elevations along moist shores near rivers, lakes, and streams. As Canada’s largest and fastest-growing maple, it can reach towering heights of up to 36 meters. The leaves are broad, measuring 15 to 30 cm across, and have five to seven distinct lobes. The unique greyish-brown bark adds to its charm, and its seeds provide nourishment for various small mammals and birds, with its twigs serving as sustenance for elk and deer.
This versatile tree is not only significant ecologically but also serves numerous practical purposes; it is used to craft furniture, musical instruments, dishes, and paddles. The inner bark has traditional uses for making baskets and rope, while the sap is a delightful ingredient for cooking, including glazes, salad dressings, and desserts.
